Letter of Support – Greenway and Harbor enhancement

I am writing to express my enthusiastic support of The Chiofaro Company’s redevelopment proposal for the Boston Harbor Garage. I believe this bold project will enhance the Greenway and transform the area between North and South Station into a vibrant link between the Greenway, the Financial District, the Wharf District, the North End and the waterfront. Boston is indeed a waterfront city, but historically, the City’s urban planning efforts and the elevated highway prevented true pedestrian access to the water. Even today, one of Boston’s most important resources – the Harbor – is blocked by a garage. We have an opportunity to breathe life into the Rose Kennedy Greenway, offering an active open space for residents, tourists, visitors and workers alike.

We have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to replace a big, boxy parking garage that does not promote an engaging streetscape, and to capitalize on the significant investment that we have collectively made in the Greenway. The Harbor Garage proposal would finally re-connect the waterfront to Boston proper, link the new Greenway with the rest of the neighborhoods in downtown Boston, and create new housing, retail, and commercial opportunities. I fully support this project.

Letter of Support – Economic Development

During these challenging times, I firmly believe that projects that can act as a catalyst for economic development and job creation are important, and I would like to voice my support for The Chiofaro Company’s Harbor Garage proposal. The plan would create two mixed-use towers alongside the Rose Kennedy Greenway, and would respond to the City’s goals of connecting the City to the harbor, and creating more housing.

In a time of rising unemployment and financial crisis, Chiofaro’s proposal would create 3-4,000 construction jobs and a number of permanent jobs, generate approximately $16 million in tax revenue, and an estimated $10 million linkage payment.  Please join me in supporting a project that can humanize the pedestrian experience and provide much needed neighborhood retail and amenities along the Greenway.  This project could be a vital asset to the City of Boston, and serve as the model for a successful urban development for the city. I urge you to join me in supporting the future of Boston.

Letter of Support – Sustainable Design

The Chiofaro Company’s Harbor Garage redevelopment plan to build two mixed-use buildings would have a tremendous and positive impact on the area, and is designed to be a model of green urban design.  The project will promote energy efficiency, encourage effective use of transportation infrastructure, enhance open space, and minimize impacts to natural resources.

This project would offer housing, hotel and office space opportunities, supported by ground-floor amenities to help keep the area lively and populated. With the Aquarium Blue Line stop located directly next to the garage, South Station close by, and water taxis and commuter ferries within walking distance, the project embodies the major tenets of a transit-oriented development (TOD) and will provide residents, employees and visitors with a variety of transportation options.

I urge you to join me in supporting the Harbor Garage proposal. It could serve as a model template for what an urban, sustainable design should look like, and serve as a significant asset for the city of Boston.
